Surprise: The Cure’s new album will be released on November 1st

This announcement – which comes two weeks after keyboardist Roger O’Donnell announced that he had cancer – puts an end to a long suspense. Often announced, just as many times postponed, the release of Songs of the Lost World will be almost sixteen years to the day after that of 4:13 Dream, published on October 28, 2008. Fans were already able to hear some new songs during the band’s final tour in 2022, such as Alone, Endsong, And Nothing is Forever, I Can Never Say Goodbye et A Fragile Thing.

But will they all be on the record? Nothing is less certain, as Robert Smith seems to have been hesitant about the final form that this album should take.

“I keep going back and redoing them, which is silly. At some point I have to say it’s over,” he explained in 2019 to Los Angeles Time. As for the atmosphere, it should be very dark, far from pop pearls like Just Like Heaven or Friday I’m in Love. “It’s definitely on the darker side of the spectrum, he continued in the same interview. I lost my mother, father and brother recently, and obviously that had an effect on me. […] The wait will be worth it. I think it’s the best thing we’ve done, but I would say a lot of the songs are hard to sing, which is why it took me a while.”
