Josh Brolin has revealed that he almost came to blows with Denzel Washington on the set of 2007's “American Gangster.”
One hand away from disaster. Before being in the cast of “Gladiator II”, Denzel Washington had collaborated with Ridley Scott in the famous police drama “American Gangster”, where he played the criminal Frank Lucas. However, the filming almost turned into a nightmare, notably during an altercation with Josh Brolin, later known for his role as Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he revealed during an interview with Graham Bensinger.
“Denzel showed up a little late on set and he showed me the lines… He didn't change anything in my lines, but he kind of changed the structure. He said, “I think I'll put this here and this up there.” But he didn’t really consult me,” explained the actor. They immediately rehearsed the scene in his new form, but Josh Brolin admitted he had difficulty adjusting due to his co-star's imposing aura.
“There weren't many lines, especially mine. And I'm supposed to be very confident. It's Denzel Washington, man. You're trying to prove that you're up to it, but it's not easy. And I forgot a line,” he added. Confused, the “Avengers” actor put his hand on his partner’s shoulder to ask, “What’s the line?” The gesture, although innocuous, was poorly received by Denzel Washington, who reacted immediately. “He slapped my hand and said, 'Don't ever lay your hand on me.' I was like, “F***, I’m going to fight Denzel Washington.” It’s crazy,” recalled the actor.
“We are no longer actors, at least in my mind. In his mind, he was just doing his job. He was Frank Lucas at that point, period. But I didn't know that. And then we got over that moment. I said to him, “Are you okay?” and he replied: “Yes. And you?” I said, “Yes. Can I have my line?” and then he gave me my line. It’s like he said what he had to say,” he said. Since then, the two stars have gotten along perfectly, he assured.
Today, Josh Brolin looks back on that episode in his memoir, “From Under the Truck,” where he shares reflections on his youth, his battles with addiction and his film experiences, including “No Country for Old Men.” Meanwhile, Denzel Washington plays the fearsome Macrinus in “Gladiator II,” currently in theaters.
