The Royal Yacht Club offers a gift to its new protector
In 1866, the first Danish yacht club was established in Copenhagen. As early as 1891, King Christian IX granted his patronage to this club, granting it permission to attach the adjective “royal” to its name. The Royal Danish Yacht Club now has more than 2000 members. It is the oldest and largest club of its kind in Denmark.

Since King Christian IX, his descendants have succeeded him and the tradition has remained that the new sovereign also becomes the new protector of the club. On January 14, 2024, Queen Margrethe abdicated in favor of her eldest son, Frederik. King Frederik X therefore became the new godfather of the yacht club. This November 20, King Frederik welcomed representatives of the club to Frederick VIII Palace in Amalienborg, in Copenhagen, to get to know each other and formalize this patronage.
The president of the board of directors, Anne Sofie Munk-Hanson, members and patrons of the club were present at this reception during which the patron of the yacht club also received a gift. The club presented a painting to the King, created by Faroese artist Hansina Iversen. Here too, it is a club tradition to offer a gift to your new sponsor.
