Discover the winners of this photo contest with $1 million in prizes

The HIPA international photography competition, known for its prestigious prize, has revealed the winners of its 13th edition. This edition was placed under the theme of sustainability. One of the particularities of this competition is the amount of cumulative winnings for the winners, with a reward fund of one million dollars. Photographers from 205 countries participated, and the ceremony took place in Dubai, at the Museum of the Future.

A great prize for sustainability

The grand prize of $200,000 was awarded to Liping Cao, a Chinese photographer, for his work entitled Quiet Power. This photograph, captured with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, shows wind turbines under a dramatic sky. It illustrates the meeting between nature and technology and perfectly embodies the theme of sustainability. Another Chinese, Ruijuan Huang, won the category Sustainability with an aerial view titled Harnessing the Sun, showing a field of solar panels in Guangdong, an example of the harmonious integration of renewable energy into a natural landscape.

The other rewarded categories

In addition to sustainability, other categories were present to reflect the diversity of photography. The price of the category Color was attributed to the Indian Rahul Sachdev for Resilience, a portrait of a rhino lit by the rays of the sun in Kenya.

In the black and white category, American Renee Capozzola won an award for Bond of the Deep, a photo featuring a whale and its calf in Tahitian waters.

Tobias Friedrich, German photographer, won the category prize Sports avec Shades of Ice, a spectacular image captured beneath the glaciers of Greenland.

Other photographers awarded

In addition to individual awards, HIPA also rewarded influential figures in the industry. Jimmy Nelson received the Appreciation Award for photography, accompanied by 100,000 dollars, for his work to bring cultures together.

Syrian Samy Al Olabi was named Photographer of the Year for his images of skyscapes. These distinctions illustrate HIPA’s ambition to promote photographic art while raising awareness of cultural and environmental issues.

However, it is important to note that the fact that this award is organized and awarded in Dubai may raise questions, the country being neither an ecological model nor an example in terms of human rights. The award-winning photographers are nonetheless incredibly talented.
