In principle, a diplomat is not supposed to give his opinion on the internal politics of his country. But it was stronger than Caroline Kennedy. United States Ambassador to Australia since 2022, the daughter of John Fitzgerald Kennedy has let slip an opinion on the potential appointment of her cousin to the Ministry of Health. “I think Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s views on vaccines are dangerous,” she said during a speech to the Australian National Press Club, reports the Guardian.
Caroline Kennedy responded to a journalist who asked her to assess the risks that her cousin, a follower of conspiracy theories and anti-vaccine activist, would pass on his opinions on a large scale if the Senate validated his entry into government. “I am a serving ambassador and I am not supposed to comment on politics. And there, you ask me my opinion about my family, so that’s a lot,” joked the daughter of John Fitzgerald and Jacqueline Kennedy, 66 years old. “I grew up with him, so I’ve known him for a long time. The others are just starting to get to know him,” she added.
The announcement of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s nomination to the Department of Health has spooked pharmaceutical investors and horrified the medical community. This former environmental law lawyer, with no scientific training, has propagated conspiracy theories, both on Covid-19 vaccines and on alleged links between vaccination and autism. He also calls for an end to the addition of fluoride to running water, although it is considered a great health success in the fight against dental caries.
“I don't think most Americans share (his ideas). I would say that our family is united in its support of the public health sector and infrastructure, and has the greatest admiration for the medical profession in our country. Bobby Kennedy has different opinions,” added his cousin.
