From the spring of 2025, the prestigious Yale University, located in New Haven, Connecticut (United States), will give a course on… Beyoncé. African American studies and music professor Daphne Brooks will teach the course titled “Beyoncé Makes History: History, Culture, Theory, and Politics of the Black Radical Tradition Through Music,” the Yale Daily NewsFriday November 8.
Students will study the singer's artistic work between 2013 and 2024 and will look at the history, intellectual thought and performance of black people. The professor had the idea for this course after teaching one called “Black Women in Popular Music Culture” at Princeton University. Beyoncé was mentioned there. “Those classes were always very well attended. There was so much energy around the focus on Beyoncé, even though it was a class that started in the late 19th century to the present day. I always thought that I should at some point come back to her and look at her work in an educational way”explained Daphne Brooks.
A course dedicated to Taylor Swift at several universities
The course will mainly focus on the musical, clothing and image aspects of the international star, from her 5th solo album “Beyoncé” to her latest “Cowboy Carter”. The diverse experiences of black women in media and politics will also be discussed. In 2023, the universities of Ghent (Belgium), Harvard (United States) and even Berkeley (United States) announced the creation of a course on Taylor Swift and her influence on pop culture.
