The Razzie Awards is an awards ceremony created in 1980 by John JB Wilson and Mo Murphy. The particularity of this ceremony is that it rewards not the best, but the worst of American cinema. The antithesis of the Oscars, the Razzies reward the worst actor of the year. Here are the ten worst American comedians of the last ten years according to the Razzie Awards:
2014 – Jaden Smith in After Earth
Released in 2013, After Earth is undoubtedly one of the worst films of M. Night Shyamalan. A shaky science fiction film, the promotion of the film mainly relied on the presence in the casting of Will Smithand his son Jaden Smith. This is bad since the two actors both received a Razzie Award. The father for the Worst Supporting Actor and the son for Worst actor. And what's more, the feature film was a failure at the box office with only $243 million recipe for a budget of $130 million.
2015 – Kirk Cameron in Saving Christmas
Released in 2014, Saving Christmas is a conservative Christmas film led by Kirk Cameron. In this feature film which (fortunately) has not been released in cinemas in France, Kirk Cameron plays Christian, a hero who wants to remind his depressed brother that Christmas is a religious holiday before being a commercial party. Kirk Cameron you don't know him. It's normal, he's a second-rate actor best known for having appeared in the series What's up, doctor? In addition to winning the Razzie Award for Worst Actor, Saving Christmas also left with the Razzies for Worst Film and Worst Screenplay.
2016 – Jamie Dornan in Fifty Shades of Gray
Released in 2015, Fifty Shades of Gray was THE Valentine's Day film. Real commercial success with more than $569 million recipe for a budget of 40 millionsthe feature film even spawned two sequels. Despite this financial success, this did not prevent the Razzie Awards from falling on the film of Sam Taylor-Johnson. Jamie Dornan walked away with the Worst Actor award, and Fifty Shades of Gray won the Razzies for Worst Actress for Dakota JohnsonWorst Screenplay, and Worst Couple on Screen.
2017 – Dinesh D'Souza in Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party
Have you never heard of this documentary? Neither do we. This documentary about Hillary Clinton directed by Dinesh D'Souza left with 5 statuettes. Dinesh D'Souza was notably awarded as Worst Actor and Worst Director. Rebekah Turner, who plays Hillary Clinton, walked away with the Razzie for Worst Actress. As for Dinesh D'Souza, he is a essayist and political commentator who has already hit the headlines because of his conservative views and his controversial documentaries. Before Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Partyhe had already made a lot of talk about himself through the documentary 2016: Obama’s America (2012) in which he criticizes the political legacy of Barack Obama. Dinesh D'Souza was even convicted in 2014 for accusations of election fraud, which added to his controversial reputation.
2018 – Tom Cruise in The Mummy
In 2017, Warner produced a remake of The Mummy. Taken by Tom Cruise the aim of this film is to launch a connected universe between all the Warner monsters (Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, etc.). Directed by Alex Kurtzman, The Mummy is a critical failure despite a fairly decent box office score: $409 million revenue (for a budget of 125 million). In any case the Razzie Awards did not spare Tom Cruise by offering him the Worst Actor award.
2019 – Donald Trump dans Fahrenheit 11/9
In 2018, the director Michael Moore is back with a sequel to Fahrenheit 9/11. In this new opus, the polemicist director tackles the controversial figure of Donald Trump (rather current). How did America get to this point and how can it get out of it? This new firebrand paints a vitriolic portrait of the times we live in and calls for resistance against Trump. To add another layer, the Razzie Awards had fun taking Trump down a little further by offering him the Worst Actor award. Obviously, the latter never came to collect his prize.
2020 – John Travolta in The Fanatic and in Victory in Blood
If in 2020, it is Cats who dominates the Razzie Awardsthe ceremony did not spare John Travolta. The Razzies in fact offered the actor two statuettes for the price of one. The actor was indeed rewarded for two of his performances, in the series Z The Fanatic et Victory in Blood. Just to send him a clear message: John is not coming back!
2021 – Mike Lindell dans Absolute Proof
Directed by Mike Lindell in person, Absolute Proof is a documentary dedicated to cyberattacks believed to have potentially influenced US presidential elections in 2020. Note that Trump's former lawyer, Rudy Giuliani was also awarded the Worst Supporting Actor award for his crazy sequence in Borat 2. The opportunity for the Razzies to play a little politics and go down a little further Donald Trumpoften in the Academy's sights.
2022 – LeBron James in Space Jam: New Era
Was it really a good idea to make a sequel to Space Jam ? According to the Razzies, clearly not. The Academy has indeed rewarded the basketball player LeBron James for his “performance” in Space Jam 2. The film also won the awards of the Worst Sequel and Worst Couple on Screen.
2023 – Jared Leto dance Morbius
This one is still well deserved. In 2022, Sony decides to continue developing its Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) with the foul-smelling Morbius. Commercial failure, critical failure, there was nothing wrong with this proposal. The Razzies jumped at the opportunity to drive the point home by giving the price of Worst Actor Jared Leto. The film also took home the statuette for Worst Supporting Actress for Adria Arjona.
2024 – Jon Voight in Mercy
And Expend4bles received the vast majority of Razzies, It is Jon Voight who leaves with the Worst Actor statuette for Mercy. Film which was not released in France, Mercy focuses on the Irish mafia who take a hospital hostage. No luck for the father Angelina Joliebut he walked away with the Razzie for Worst Actor.
