“An anomaly”, Dany Boon looks back on the failure of his film with Kad Merad and Charlotte Gainsbourg

An emblematic figure of French cinema, Dany Boon is a multi-talented artist. Actor, director, screenwriter and comedian, Laurence Arné's companion has more than one string to his bow.

Since his debut, he has been able to conquer the public with his notable roles and his achievements, becoming one of the most popular filmmakers of his generation.

Among his greatest successes is the film Welcome to the Ch'tis (2008) which undoubtedly remains his greatest triumph. This feature film, which he directed and in which he also played the main role, broke all records in with more than 20 million entries.

A career at half mast

Since the phenomenon Welcome to the Ch'tisDany Boon has made several films, but none of them have matched the impact of his first big success. Productions like Nothing to declare (2010), Supercondriaque (2014) or even The Ch'tite family (2018) attracted its share of viewers, but viewing figures gradually declined.

The public seems in fact less receptive to his cinematographic proposals and some of his films have met with a more mixed reception both critically and commercially. This is the case of his latest feature film, Life for realin which he himself plays opposite Charlotte Gainsbourg and his long-time friend, Kad Merad.

Dany Boon rules the flop of Life for Real

For the first time in his career, the production did not exceed the million admissions mark, a milestone that he was accustomed to crossing.

In an interview given to ParisianDany Boon expressed his point of view. “For me, it's not a failure“, he assured before adding: “I made the film I wanted to make.”

Although he recognizes that this feature film did not meet with the same success as his previous works, Dany Boon is pragmatic and optimistic: “I made seven successful films, plus those as an actor. It is already an anomaly to do so much. And 800,000 entries is nothing to be ashamed of.”

If the filmmaker does not consider Life for real like a flop, it is still important to remember that the budget was very high for a French comedy with estimates varying between 23 and 30 million euros, depending on BlogTVNews.
