The cult British group is back after 16 years of absence, with an album entitled Songs of a lost worldwith a melancholy sound, and
Sixteen years since they released an album. The legendary British group The Cure, led by its charismatic leader Robert Smith, releases its first album since 2008 on Friday, Songs of a lost world.
This album, already garnered by rave reviews, is the 14th studio album of the group which marked the 1980s and 1990s with hits like Boys Don’t Cry, Close To Me or Friday I’m In Love. Songs of a lost world black a vinyl, CD, cassette et a streaming.
The head of the group, Robert Smith, is 65 years old, but maintains his unique style, tousled hair, smokey eyes and red lipstick.
“Artistic peak”
The first reviews are extremely positive, like that of the Guardian, which judges that Songs of a lost world is the band's best album since Disintegration in 1989.
“The group is at its artistic peak: melancholic and moving, with a percussive sound that matches the emotional impact of the lyrics,” writes the daily.
In Songs of a lost worldRobert Smith sings of melancholy, speaks of death and mourning.
“Death is unfortunately more and more present every day. When you are younger, you romanticize it. Then it starts to happen to your close family and friends. Then it's a different story,” he said. -he told the BBC ahead of the album's release.
Robert Smith explains in a video accompanying the release of the album that he lost his brother and “all (his) uncles and aunts”.
The album is “sequenced in such a way that it takes you somewhere,” he said in an interview posted on the band's YouTube page.
“It lasts about 50 minutes and you end up in a different place than where you started. I hope people respond to it,” added Robert Smith.
The Cure hadn't released a record since 4.3 Dream in 2008.
Waited for over two years
But the group, formed in 1976 in Crawley in Sussex (southern England) and which has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, continues to fill halls and stadiums wherever it performs.
In July 2018, The Cure celebrated its forty years of career during a major concert on the lawn of Hyde Park, in London in front of 65,000 people.
To announce this album, eagerly awaited by fans, the group chose to arouse curiosity. Robert Smith's group sent black postcards for a whole week in mid-September with the words “Songs of a lost world” and a date, November 1, 2024. They also posted a sign in front of The Railway pub in the town of Crawley.
It was in the pub of this small town in West Sussex, between London and Brighton, that they gave their very first concert, in 1978.
This disc is a real sea serpent. From 2020, Robert Smith spoke about these two albums, one with the group, the other solo, made during confinement.
Fans are waiting for the album Songs of a lost world for more than two years. Robert Smith announced it in March 2022 during an interview on the sidelines of the NME Awards, mentioning working on two albums. The first, Songs of a lost worldwas then due to be released in September 2022.
Since then, the group has revealed during its tour Shows of a lost world in 2023, several new songs, including Alone, Endsong, Nothing Is Forever et I Can Never Say Goodbye.
