Very professional, Robert De Niro is used to traditional methods in the industry. So, he wanted to do a reading with the film crew before filming began. More accustomed to working alone and completely immersing himself in his character, Joaquim Phoenix was categorically opposed to this type of exercise. Faced with pressure from the director, Todd Philipps, the joker finally agreed to produce a round table, but without cheerfulness. A lack of involvement which quickly irritated Robert De Niro, so much so that tense exchanges took place.

Fortunately, the situation never degenerated between the two actors, but the tensions remained very palpable, so much so that they did not speak a word to each other outside of takes. Tensions which only reinforced the authenticity of the confrontation of the two characters they played in the film. In fact, in JokerJoaquin Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, a man rejected by society who will lead him into a spiral of unprecedented violence. For his part, Robert De Niro takes on the features of Murray Franklin, a cynical talk show host, whom Fleck idolizes then ends up hating.
If the on-screen rendering is very convincing, after such tensions behind the scenes, it seems unlikely that the two actors will work together again. The second part of the saga, Joker: Folie à Deux, is currently in theaters, but it seems that the film has been much less praised by critics. A situation which saddens Lady Gaga, who lends her features to Harley Quinn.
