Florent Pagny confirmed having recorded a song in support of Paul Watson, the founder of Sea Shepherd and fervent protector of the oceans and whales imprisoned in Greenland since July.
“If with my little voice I can be useful, I do it,” Florent Pagny declared this Sunday, October 13. In an interview for Le Parisien, the singer announced that he had lent his voice to a song in support of Paul Watson, the founder of Sea Shepherd who has been in prison since July and under an international arrest warrant issued by Japan.
This title is by Francis Lalanne for the music and lyrics. The latter’s idea is to bring together other artists to record a collective title, like “We Are the World” in 1985 which brought together artists against hunger in Africa.
Confident that he gets involved “rarely, because I am not an activist” – and while distancing himself from the controversial positions of Francis Lalanne – Florent Pagny confided that this time he decided to support the boss of Sea Shepherd, because “the cause is good, the guy is in a trap.
Florent Pagny explained to the newspaper why this cause was particularly close to his heart, saying he often observed the sumptuous ballet of whales near his home, in Patagonia. The coach of “The Voice” compares the slaughter of whales to that of deer: “Frankly, I have the same feeling when you put a bullet in a deer, a peaceful animal,” he declared about fishing practiced by the Japanese who massacre the whales.
Other artists at the front
Florent Pagny says he suggested other artists lend their voices like Cali who recorded with him. Le Parisien understands that Anne Sylla, Arielle Dombasle, David Hallyday, Manu Lanvin, Fabienne Thibeault, Yannick Noah, Véronique Sanson, or the Tryo group could join them. Other artists had already shown their support for Paul Watson, such as Gojira and Shaka Ponk, who are mobilizing to denounce his arrest.
A few weeks ago, Francis Lalanne, leaving for Greenland to demand the release of the Canadian national, called on artists to mobilize: “I am trying to mobilize as many people as possible in the artistic world. I am starting to be joined by many artists who support me and who I hope will join me in singing for the release of Paul Watson. Or to help Sea Shepherd carry out its campaigns if Paul Watson is released.”
Paul Watson, 73, was arrested in July 2024. Famous defender of marine mammals, the founder of the NGO Sea Shepherd, is today incarcerated in Greenland and risks extradition to Japan in order to be imprisoned. Tokyo accuses him of having injured fishermen during his interventions against Japanese whalers.
