“Extremely surprised”: the very unusual remarks of her guest make Apolline de Malherbe fall from her chair

This Thursday, October 10, 2024, Apolline de Malherbe received the secretary of the CFDT, Marylise Léon. The opportunity for the journalist to question her guest about the announcements made by Michel Barnier to reduce ’s deficit. Indeed, the Prime Minister notably mentioned the reduction in aid for companies hiring apprentices.
“I think this is part of the efforts that companies must make”begins by declaring the union secretary.

“The budget must make it possible to reduce the deficit. That means you have to make an effort. There must be more revenue and less spending. That companies contribute to this effort seems normal to me”, indicates Maryline Léon.

Apolline de Malherbe has a hard time hiding her astonishment at her guest

In front of her, Apolline de Malherbe will then share her surprise. He should have hired you Michel Barnier. It’s been a long time since I heard a union so ardently defend budget cuts and a budget”says the journalist, her eyes wide.

The presenter continues her reasoning: “I am actually extremely surprised. I’ve been seeing you for years, I’ve also been seeing your predecessors, whether it’s Laurent Berger, whether it’s the CGT and a priori, you are often against it.
There, for once, you say ‘we’re going’”
. An observation shared by his guest: “Because we have no choice”, she asks him.

The journalist says she is not used to hearing this type of speech

For the secretary of the CFDT, this situation is quite perilous: “At some point, if we want to be able to project ourselves into the future, and be able to have investments and to be able to continue to have secure career paths, with Social Security… We must be able to act responsibly”she believes.

“It seems to surprise you, this has always been the CFDT’s line of conduct. (…) My challenge is to make the voice of workers heard”. A speech which therefore
amazed Apolline de Malherbe
who is not really used to seeing a union defend budget cuts so much.
