Liam Hemsworth: Exploring our identity is very relevant in our times

Fans of the “Hunger Games” saga remember him as Gale Hawthorne. But it is above all in the celebrity department that Liam Hemsworth took the lead, for his marriage – then his high-profile divorce – with Miley Cyrus. However, the 34-year-old Australian actor, little brother of Chris Hemsworth, has nothing to be ashamed of his filmography. There are sci-fi films (“Independence Day: Resurgence”), westerns (“The Duel”), and even thrillers (“Poker Face”). With “Lonely Planet”, available from October 11, 2024 on Netflix, he is starring in a romantic film.

How to present “Lonely Planet”?

I play Owen who accompanies his girlfriend as she goes on a spiritual retreat in the Moroccan Atlas. We quickly understand that things are not ideal between them, and everything will change when he meets a woman older than him during this trip. Katherine, a novelist played by Laura Dern, will turn his life upside down and make him open his eyes and his mind to the meaning of existence. I was incredibly lucky to have her as a partner because Laura really helped me to surpass myself in this role, which was very different from anything I had done in the past.

What made you want to participate in this project?

This scenario was proposed to me at a time in my life when I was deep in self-reflection. This exploration of our identity and the self-esteem we should have, I found it very relevant for our times. The story between our two characters goes way beyond simple romance because they both want to be seen and understood above all else. We are far from the approach of a classic romantic comedy.

You filmed in Morocco. How did it go?

I only have good memories because we were welcomed with open arms by the local technical team. Over the weeks, we discovered very varied landscapes, from villages in the mountains to typical towns, to the desert then to the sea. Morocco has it all: camels on the beach, goats in the trees. .. I even almost stepped on a viper one day! Luckily a technician warned me that I could die if I got bitten. But apart from this snake, everything was extraordinary (laughter).

You are one of the many Australians who are big fans of surfing. Did you have time to practice in Morocco?

No, and it’s very unfortunate because I know that some of the best surf spots are on the Moroccan Atlantic coast. I would have loved to bring my board on the plane, but I knew it would be too complicated. We filmed “Lonely Planet” in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic and there were many restrictions.
