Halle Berry, witness to the violence of her alcoholic father: “I saw him mistreat my mother and my sister”

Guest of Armchair Expert, the podcast of comedian Shepard, Halle Berry opened up as rarely about her childhood. A childhood marked by violence. That of his father, an alcoholic. His father, Jerome, and his mother, Judith, had two daughters, Heidi and Halle, the youngest (they also have an older half-sister, Renee, editor’s note). Jerome left home when Halle was around 4 years old, he reappeared in her life a few years later. “I saw my mother being abused, and I saw my sister also being abused by my father, but never metestified the actress. He never directed this rage at me and I never came between him and his rage. I always ran and hid. I didn’t rebel, although my sister did, and she took everything. I had a lot of guilt because I didn’t get beaten, I didn’t do anything to defend them.”

Halle Berry forgave her abusive father

However, over the years, she ended up forgiving her father, who died in 2003 from Parkinson’s disease. As she explained in 2021, she called on a spiritual healer thanks to whom she says she understood that he “wasn’t a monster” and that his actions were due “to the love and attention he never had.” “He didn’t know how to love usshe told Dax Shepard. I understood who my father was and I felt that it healed a lot of my childhood trauma… He did the best he could.”

In 2019, on the occasion of Father’s Day, the actress paid him a vibrant tribute: “On this Father’s Day, my heart is full… full of love for my DAD!Halle had written. Although I didn’t have much of a relationship with him while he was there because he was addicted to alcohol and that addiction stole the relationship we were supposed to have, I now understand how much he loved me and how vital he was and is in my life! I miss you today, Dad, and wherever you are, I know you smile when you look at me because I feel your love!”

“I set out in search of the perfect family life”

In Dax Shepard’s podcast, Halle also explained that growing up in such a climate of violence influenced her relations futures. But that having forgiven his father had been a trigger: “I knew that in that moment, I could only try to make decisions that would make my life better and different. That’s when I started looking for the perfect family life. I wanted the stability of a family because I hadn’t known it. I wanted a perfect marriage with children… [et] I didn’t want to fight.”she said. And did she succeed? Almost.

The actress was married to baseball player David Justice from 1993 to 1996, then to singer Eric Benét from 2001 to 2005 (who cheated on her many times). In the meantime, she had a romance with Shemar Moore. She had a daughter, Nahla, born in 2006 from her relationship with model Gabriel Aubry. Then, she married the actor Olivier Martinez, father of her son Maceo, born in 2013. They separated in 2015. Since 2020, it is the musician Van Hunt who shares her life, “this is the longest relationship that I ever had. In all my life”. Generally, “she does not exceed three years”she joked to Dax Shepard.
