During an interview with the American magazine Variety, President Emmanuel Macron indulged in a few confessions. Among them, his fondest memory of the 2024 Olympics, his opinion on the singer Taylor Swift, but also on the appearance of his wife Brigitte in the series “Emily in Paris”.
Confidence for confidence. Emmanuel Macron gave an interview across the Atlantic for the American magazine Variety, the bible of cinema in Hollywood. By answering around twenty questions, the President of the Republic swept aside many subjects. From Taylor Swift to the Olympic Games via the hit series “Emily in Paris”, the ENA alumnus spoke of the importance of pop culture in a darkening society.
“It’s a good image for France”
While Netflix released season 4 of the series “Emily in Paris” last month, many fans of the most French American woman recognized the President’s wife in one of the episodes. Brigitte Macron was content with a cameo of barely more than a minute in episode 7, time to exchange a few words and a selfie with the heroine played by Lily Collins. “My country adores you, Emily!” rejoiced the first lady in her few lines of dialogue.
An appearance that Emmanuel Macron really liked. “I was very proud, and she was very happy with this shoot. I think it’s a good image for France,” declared the President. And when the American journalist in charge of the interview wanted to know if the Netflix teams had also offered him an appearance, Emmanuel Macron slipped a compliment to his wife in response. “I am less charismatic than Brigitte,” he admitted, adding that he was going to fight for the heroine to return to the French capital, rather than to Rome, according to the scenario of this season 4 : “Emily in Paris in Rome makes no sense!”
Very moved by Léon Marchand and Céline Dion
During this interview, the President of the Republic also returned to the event which marked the French this summer, the Paris Olympic Games. And among his favorite memories are the victory of swimmer Léon Marchand. “Winning two gold medals in two hours was incredible,” he said. Other notable moments of these Games, the triumph of the French team judo team, but also the surprise performance of Céline Dion during the opening ceremony. “Seeing the lights illuminate Celine Dion in the Eiffel Tower, and seeing her perform the “Hymn to Love”, it created a lot of emotion,” he added.
The notable presence of the singer Lady Gaga, currently starring in the second part of “Joker”, was also welcomed by Emmanuel Macron. “It was very generous of him. I know she worked a lot. She decided to sing Zizi Jeanmaire and be part of this French culture. She took a lot of risks and did very well. And I told him that for us, it meant a lot,” he confided.
“Taylor Swift? It’s a phenomenon”
The new queen of pop Taylor Swift opened the European leg of her tour this year with four dates in Paris. And the presence in the capital of the richest singer in the world did not go unnoticed by Emmanuel Macron. “His Era’s Tour is very impressive. She is one of the rare artists who can bring together so many people. For the French, all generations combined, and for the economy, it was absolutely unique. It’s a phenomenon!” he declared.
“Have you seen the deepfake (video created by artificial intelligence, Editor’s note) of you and Taylor Swift dancing?” added the journalist. To which Emmanuel Macron replied: “I didn’t see that one, but I came across this montage this summer where I kissed one of my security agents. Millions of people have seen it. “It’s not a bad thing in itself, but it’s not reality.”
In this interview devoted largely to pop culture, the President of the Republic spoke about his tastes in cinema. “I love French films from the 60s and 70s, for example “Cent Mille Dollars au Soleil” or “Le Second Souffle”. “Les Tontons Flingueurs” too. I love this period of French cinema,” he confided. An interview from a less political prism, given in a context of growing unpopularity for Emmanuel Macron.
