A few days ago, David Beckham met Prince William in London to inaugurate new ambulance helicopters financed by their fundraising. A meeting that recalls the special relationship of Beckhams with the royal family, while the former footballer was chosen as an ambassador for the King’s Foundation by Charles III.
But if David and Victoria are undeniably close to the crowned heads who remained in London, are they as close to Meghan and Harry? There was a time when the two couples seemed friends, as indicated by the presence of David and Victoria Beckham at the Sussex wedding in 2018. But according to information from Richard Eden, journalist for the Daily Mail, things have changed.

Indeed, the Beckhams have reportedly distanced themselves from Harry and Meghan since the couple’s accusations against the royal family. “David was always a staunch royalist who defended the Queen’s speech every Christmas, dressed in his Sunday best (…) he queued for 12 hours to see the Queen’s coffin”, recalls Richard Eden before adding: “It is therefore not surprising that Sussex attacks on the royal family did not enchant the Beckhams”.
For the editorialist, the two couples, once close, no longer share the same values. “Both David and Victoria value family and would never turn away from theirs like Harry and Meghan did”, tells a relative of the Beckhams to the journalist. Another notable fact: still according to this relative, Meghan Markle and Victoria Beckham would never have been like thieves. “In reality, Victoria never really appreciated Meghan. She has been friendly and welcoming to her, but is not keen to stay in touch”, says the latter to Richard Eden.

Thus, the friendship which linked the Beckhams and the Sussexes was mainly based on David and Harry, but the prince would have since snubbed the footballer during the Invictus Games in Sydney, in 2018. As Richard Eden indicates, David Beckham would have made the trip to Australia to attend the sporting event at the request of Prince Harry, before learning that he would not see the heir of the stay (and therefore no photo of the meeting).
The reason? Meghan Markle, according to biographer Tom Bower. “She didn’t want that David competes with him in the media”, writes the latter in his book Revenge. Then added: “She was not prepared to tolerate the media publishing anything flattering about the Beckhams and the Games”. An incident which probably weakened the relationship between the Beckhams and the Sussexes.
