Bill Wyman: “I don’t regret leaving the Rolling Stones”

She’s the oldest rockstar. At almost 88 years old (he will be at the end of October), Bill Wyman is best known for having been the discreet bassist of the Rolling Stones between 1962 and 1993. Thirty years anyway! While the Mick Jagger gang is still rolling, Bill Wyman is pursuing a solo career in his own image, far from any media pressure. He has just released a moving and quiet new album, Drive my car.

Within the Rolling Stones, it wasn’t necessarily him that people noticed first. Everyone knows Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. They have been occupying the public space for more than sixty years with scandals, resounding declarations, and, most importantly, legendary songs that redefined the popular culture of the 60s. But behind this duo which captured all the light, there was Bill Wyman, a sinister-looking bassist, who you could see without really looking at him. And yet, its whirring notes – on 19th Nervous Breakdown notably – shook the walls of stadiums around the world.
