“There are several P. Diddys in Senegalese showbiz, I had…”

During the Aaru Mbed show broadcast this Thursday, October 3, 2024, hosted by Pape Sidy Fall, the Senegalese singer Oumy Guèye, better known under the stage name OMG, addressed the challenges faced by women in the Senegalese musical environment, especially in hip-hop.

While the name of the famous American producer P. Diddy is mentioned, Pape Sidy Fall questions OMG: “Don’t talk to me about P. Diddy unless we’re talking about those from Senegal. Are there P. Diddys in Senegal? “.

OMG, known for her outspokenness, responded by exposing a harsh reality for women artists in Senegal: “It depends… You know what women experience in the music industry, particularly in hip-hop. They are going through an ordeal. Men manage everything: production, videos, direction…”. She then added that it is difficult for women to access these opportunities, although she herself was lucky to find a producer very early in her career.

OMG also highlighted that many women in the arts are reluctant to speak openly about the challenges they face, for fear of reprisals. She clarified, however, that she has never been a victim of such practices, but she remains in solidarity with other women who, according to her, suffer in silence.
