More than one in two French people (52%) have a positive opinion of Michel Barnier, almost a month after his appointment as Prime Minister, according to a BVA Xsight survey for RTL published on Wednesday.

The day after his general policy speech, only 44% of French people considered it convincing. However, 64% consider that Michel Barnier is a man of conviction, and some of his proposals seem to appeal, particularly on budgetary matters. Indeed, a very large majority of French people (83%) are in favor of an exceptional contribution on the profits of very large companies, and 71% of an increase in income tax for the wealthiest households.

The French, on the other hand, have doubts about Michel Barnier’s ability to respond to their concerns: only 41% believe that he can propose concrete measures to improve their daily lives. 35% trust it to take effective action in terms of purchasing power. More than half of French people (53%) also doubt its ability to avoid censorship.

The President of the Republic seems to be suffering from the political sequence: Emmanuel Macron’s popularity rating drops to 26%, returning to its lowest level, already reached in 2018 and then in 2023.

The survey was carried out online on October 1 and 2 among 1,001 people aged 18 and over whose representativeness is ensured by the quota method applied to several variables, such as sex, age, profession, or even the region. Margin of error between 1.4 and 3.1 points.
