Imarhan Group: the ambassadors of the new Targui music scene

Originally from the Algerian desert expanses, the Imarhan group translates the history of the Tuaregs, a nomadic people, into melodies that transcend borders.

Made up of five members, the Imarhan group symbolizes the new generation of Tuareg musicians. They fuse modern rhythms with the ancestral style of the Kel Tamashek people, thus creating a unique musical identity.

With an exceptional career, the Imarhan group breathes new energy into Targui song and shakes up music scenes around the world.

Imarhan: the reinvention of Targui music

Imarhan, which means “those who wish me well” in Tamasheq, was founded in 2006. This group is the fruit of the friendship between Iyad Moussa Ben Abderahmane (aka Sadam), Tahar Khaldi, Abdelkader Ourzig, Hicham Bouhasse and Haiballah Akhamouk. All from Tmanrasset, a refuge town for the Tuaregs of northern Mali since 1990, they met arounda common passion: music.

Imarhan’s music draws on Assouf, desert blueswhile drawing inspiration from Algerian and Western pop-rock influences.

The first self-titled album Imarhan » by the group was released in 2016, marking the start of a dazzling musical adventure. Two years later, in 2018, Imarhan released their second album titled “ Burial“. A production that propels them to the forefront of the Targui musical scene.

In 2022, they recorded their third album in their own studio located in the heart of their hometown, in the Hoggar massif in Tamanraset. With this album, bearing the name of “ Aboog“, the Imarhan group becomes the symbol of the new generation of Tuareg musicians.

By navigating between ancestral traditions and modern rhythms, Imarhan offers contemplative and committed songs.

A musical journey without borders that makes the voice of the desert heard

With a unique style, the Imarhan group has attracted a wide audience. Moreover, they toured several stages in Algeria and abroadparticularly in Europe and the United States.

The group has also collaborated with various renowned artists, including:

  • The pioneering group of proud music, Tinariwenwho greatly inspired Imarhan;
  • Welsh singer Gruff Rhyswho is one of the members of the famous group Super Furry Animals;
  • American songwriter Kurt Vilewith whom the group Imarhan shared the stage several times;
  • The female group of proud music, The Daughters of Illighadad, who collaborated with the group during various festivals;

Through their captivating songs and music, the Imarhan group brings Assouf back to life. Thus, they propelled Targui culture beyond the desert expanses of southern Algeria.
