This September 27 evening, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were seen very smiling when they went to the restaurant, concluding their day of family reunion in Galicia, with a romantic dinner. Earlier in the day, the royal couple was surrounded by their eldest daughter, Princess Leonor, and former ruler, King Juan Carlos. The family reunion took place two days after the “Bárbara Rey affair” which shook Spain.

King Felipe reunites Princess Leonor and King Juan Carlos in Galicia
Family reunions often have the appearance of crisis meetings in the Spanish royal family. This September 27, King Felipe VI traveled to Marín, Galicia, with his wife, Queen Letizia, to attend the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the oath to the flag of his promotion of the Naval Military School. This event took place in a private setting and the sovereigns had freed up their schedules this Friday to participate.

It was believed that the day off was taken by the couple in order to travel to Athens, where Felipe’s first cousin, Princess Theodora of Greece, was launching her wedding festivities. Felipe’s mother and sisters, Queen Sofia and the Infantes Elena and Cristina, were indeed in Athens. King Felipe preferred to meet his classmates in Marín, and take the opportunity to find his daughter. The Princess of Asturias joined the Naval Academy a few weeks ago.
Quite exceptionally, King Juan Carlos joined the group. Usually, the former monarch prefers not to appear near King Felipe. The meeting, which took place far from the journalists’ objectives, allowed Juan Carlos to reunite with his son and granddaughter. The heir to the throne appears very little alongside her grandfather. King Juan Carlos, who usually lives in Abu Dhabi, is currently in Galicia attending regattas.

The family meeting takes place in the midst of a crisis after the disclosure of the photos of Juan Carlos and Bárbara Rey
The summit meeting coincides with the latest controversies surrounding the former sovereign. On each of his trips back to Spain, a new affair broke out about him. Earlier in the week, the Dutch celebrity magazine Privaterevealed previously unpublished photos dating from 1994. We see King Juan Carlos kissing and hugging a woman, who is none other than Spanish television presenter Bárbara Rey. The relationship between Juan Carlos and Bárbara Rey is an open secret. Their affair had been known to everyone for years but there was a certain silence on this subject in Spain.

After the summit meeting between King Felipe, King Juan Carlos and Princess Leonor, it was time to relax. King Felipe and Queen Letizia were seen holding hands and smiling as they visited the O’Peirao restaurant in Combarro at the end of the day. The royal couple enjoyed a romantic tête-à-tête to end this family day in Galicia.
The photos, published in a Dutch magazine, were probably stolen. Barbara Rey is shocked and says to herself “devastated” by this theft of photos which belong to him. The photos were stolen by his own son, Angel Cristo, who is also the author. The man, now in his forties, says he was forced by his mother when he was 13 years old. Bárbara Rey would have asked her son to photograph her discreetly when she met the king, in order to one day use the photos, in the event of putting pressure on the sovereign. After an episodic relationship for around twenty years, Juan Carlos and Barbara ended their affair in 1994 and the TV presenter would have obtained comfortable financial compensation in exchange for her silence.
