Historical figure of the French musical scene, the group Indochine has been the subject of a new parody in recent days. In fact, the comedians of the show called The big Cactusbroadcast on RTBF in Belgium, made fun of the group’s famous hit called 3rd gender. They thus performed their own version of this title, renamed for the occasion 128th sex. “Boy, girl or mint tea”, “I don’t care, I’m gender neutral”, “I am a marble or a heron”, “I am a rabbit who feels like a fish”, “Am I a woman or Brigitte Macron?”they notably sang. This sequence quickly created controversy on social networks, due to its content deemed transphobic by many viewers. “If transphobia is a ‘value’ that you advocate, then I will gladly give you back my title“wrote Alvita, last winner as of Drag Race Belgiumon social networks.
“It was neither necessary, nor pleasant and above all nasty and dangerous. I doubt that was the intention, but in 2024, it is destabilizing for your audience. There is still time to realize the damage done and correct it.“, said Nicky Doll, famous French drag queen. Following numerous complaints from viewers, the Belgian CSA took up this matter. “The CSA Instruction Secretariat (…) examines at this stage the content of the sequence to assess whether it infringes (the) audiovisual decree relating to discrimination in programs”wrote the institution on this subject. For its part, RTBF apologized. “Since this weekend, a video taken from the Grand Cactus show, posted on social networks, has sparked controversy. RTBF expresses its most sincere regrets to all the people who were affected by this sequence“, wrote the channel on Instagram.
Indochine provided its support to the LGTBQIA+ community
“To provide responses commensurate with the situation, it is essential to conduct an in-depth dialogue with representatives of diversity associations. RTBF will communicate on the concrete measures when this work has been carried out. RTBF reaffirms its commitment to the fight against discrimination, which is and remains a cardinal value for our media“, also added the Belgian public audiovisual group. For its part, Indochina also reacted to this controversy in a press release. “Indochine discovered the distressing parody video of the show the Big Cactus of RTBF and provides all its support to the LGTBQIA+ community“, notably indicated the group of Nicola Sirkis.
