I am a marble or a heron / Me a rabbit who feels like a fish “. They thought they would make the whole of Belgium laugh, but they ended up triggering a huge scandal. For the needs of a sketch on the Belgian show “Le grand cactus” on RTBF, the two comedians Damien Gillard and Cécile Giroud parodied the hit “3e sexe” by Indochine and Christine and the Queens (since renamed Rahim Redcar) by making themselves up like the two singers and making lots of jokes about transgender identity and non-binarity. They even went so far as to sing ” Am I a woman or Brigitte Macron? ” in front of a hilarious audience. If they thought they were on target, the two comedians have since been at the heart of a huge controversy and many personalities, including drag queens from the Belgian and French editions of “Drag Race”, say they are shocked by this parody deemed transphobic, ” unacceptable ” And ” intolerable “. ” It was neither necessary nor pleasant and above all mean and dangerous. I doubt that was the intention, but in 2024, it is destabilizing for your audience. There is still time to realize the harm done and correct the thing ” writes Nicky Doll in particular.

“The group supports the LGBT community”

The RTBF press release, which denies any ” call for hatred ” and recalls that the chain ” produces a lot of content to address social issues in line with the plurality of opinions “, added fuel to the fire and further angered the drag queens in question. A week after it was broadcast on Belgian airwaves, and while the CSA opened an investigation, Indochina breaks its silence. In a sober statement shared with the media, the group says it has ” discovered the distressing parody video of the RTBF show “Le Grand Cactus” and gives its full support to the LGTBQIA+ community “. An essential message from Nicola Sirkis’s band, who have always supported this community, especially since the release of the hit “3e sexe” 39 years ago. ” It’s both sad and good that it’s relevant. The world is still racist and homophobic and young people are the bearers of hope in this regard. ” the singer confided to us in a “Face A” format.

Let’s hope this dispute does not prevent Indochina to reunite with its ultra-loyal Belgian audience. From April 1st to 5th, the group will give four concerts at the ING Arena in Brussels (ex-Palais 12) as part of its huge “Arena Tour”. The last tickets are available for the concerts on April 1st and 2nd.
