Hugues Aufray confides his “terrible” handicap detected after the death of his brother

Appearing on Bleu this Tuesday, September 17, Hugues Aufray spoke about his terrible handicap, which was discovered after the death of his brother in the mid-1950s.

We owe him a whole repertoire filled with emblematic titles of French song. Santiano, Celine Or Stewball… Many have already hummed these tunes that have passed down through the generations without losing their brilliance. The same could be said of their performer. At 95, Hugues Aufray is still at the forefront of the stage and is currently performing on tour, hoping to revive a handful of the 430 pieces associated with him. An exceptional longevity for someone who was originally destined to become a farmer.

Hugues Aufray, so upset he lost his voice

As many already know, Hugues Aufray was deeply affected by the tragic death of his brother at only 27 years old. The budding artist decided three years later to become a professional in music, perhaps as a kind of therapy. He describes, in fact, his elder as a man endowed with a “unique voice in the world”. The (future) singer is not left behind but encounters significant vocal problems. I started this job with a terrible handicap, my broken voice, which was completely stifled after my brother’s death.he explains in Decibels this Tuesday, September 17. A singularity which, according to him, touched the public if not made the difference.

Hugues Aufray talks about the woman who helped him find his voice again and launch his career

Still on the microphone of France Bluethe guitarist remembers: “When I was little, I sang in church, I had a normal voice and then suddenly, when my brother died, I couldn’t speak anymore. I became almost mute. I was just a year younger than him, 26 [ans]”. Hugues Aufray has obviously found his voice again, otherwise he would not be able to tell this story on the radio seventy years later. “I finally started singing because I met a woman who saved me. I could hardly speak anymore and she made me work on what is called expiration”reveals Murielle’s companion. And to inform: “People think that you work on your breath to sing, but you breathe out when you sing, it’s air that comes out of your body. When someone is mute, you first have to teach them to scream and then transform that into a melody.” Advice that has clearly worked well.
