After Nosferatu, Robert Eggers will direct this other gothic film, we can’t wait

The American director Robert Eggerswhich caused a sensation at the end of 2024 with the release of Nosferatuhas just announced what his next feature film will be: a project that will delight fans of gothic monsters.

After Nosferatu, the next promising film by Robert Eggers

From The Witch (2015), Robert Eggers has become one of the great references of contemporary American cinema. Often cited as a reference in the revival of horror cinema alongside Jordan Peele, Ari Aster and Mike Flanagan, Robert Eggers then continued with The Lighthouse (2019), The Northman (2022) et Nosferatu (2024). Very early on, the filmmaker showed his appetite for folklore, tales and legends. With NosferatuRobert Eggers proposed a rereading of Friedrich W. Murnau’s expressionist masterpiece, which was itself an unofficial adaptation of the epistolary novel Dracula by the Irish writer Bram Stoker.

Acclaimed by American critics, who particularly appreciated the atmosphere and aesthetic work of the film, Nosferatu attracted more mixed reviews in , notably because of the appearance of Count Orlok. Nevertheless, Robert Eggers can congratulate himself since Nosferatu is officially the second biggest US box office success from production studio Focus Features. A great success, certainly. Good news, the director will be able to do better with his next project, still produced by the same studio, and of which the first information was revealed by Deadline this week.

Indeed, we learn that Robert Eggers’ next film will be released for Christmas 2026 and is titled Werwulf. It is a werewolf film set in 13th century England and will be filmed in Old English, with subtitles to allow understanding for English-speaking audiences. In addition to offering a new period film, Werwulf will return to the very basis of the Gothic movement, which has maintained close links with the Middle Ages since its appearance.

Moreover, Werwulf will mark the new collaboration between Robert Eggers and Sjón, close collaborator of the singer Björk, and with whom he had already written the screenplay for The Northman. Obviously, all these elements make us even more eager to discover Eggers’ next film. We also remind you that the filmmaker is also working on a remake project of a cult fantasy film.
