Jane Fonda, 87, says her exercise routine has remained essentially the same over the years.

“I do almost everything I did before, but at a slower pace,” she said in an interview with People magazine, adding that she enjoys walks.

Studies show that a simple goal of 4,000 steps per day can reduce the risk of premature death.

Although Jane Fonda is 87 years old, her physical shape remains impressive.

Indeed, the workout routine of this aerobics and cinema legend has changed little, as she shared during an interview with “People” published last weekend.

“I’m basically doing the same things as before, but more slowly,” Fonda says. “I used to be a runner, but now I love walking. I enjoy being outside, especially climbing and descending in the woods. »

No matter her schedule, Fonda makes sure to move a little every day. “I train every day, so it’s essential that I vary my movements. I take turns doing upper and lower body exercises to build strength. I also find a way to exercise my core, and my favorite method is to take a walk outside,” she adds.

The actress has long been passionate about fitness. In the 1980s, she released several home workout videos, starting with “Jane Fonda’s Workout” in 1982.

Looking back on her workout tapes, Fonda admits she “had no idea” of their future success. “When I started, there weren’t a lot of rigorous training programs for women,” she says. “In the 1970s, I learned the basics of coaching from a charismatic teacher named Leni Kasden. »

Following the release of her videos, she received “incredible letters from all over the world” from fans sharing the impact the exercises had on their lives, she recalls.

“One was from a young woman in the Peace Corps in Guatemala, who was doing her exercises in her mud hut,” Fonda says. “Another woman wrote that when she looked in the mirror while brushing her teeth, she noticed new muscles in her arms. She explained that she felt empowered because of it. That day, she went to work and confronted her difficult boss for the first time. »

Walking can prolong life

For those who lead a sedentary lifestyle, the best thing you can do for your health is to start somewhere, says Suzanne Steinbaum, a board-certified cardiologist, in comments reported by Business Insider.

“Doing something is always better than doing nothing,” she says. “If walking is the start of a cardio-healthy life, then it’s the first steps that create lasting, beneficial habits for life. »

A study published in 2023 in the “European Journal of Preventive Cardiology” found that taking just 4,000 steps per day can reduce the risk of dying prematurely.

Research shows that walking can help reduce stress and anxiety while improving heart health. Some studies also suggest that brisk walking, at a speed of around 4.35 to 4.83 kilometers per hour, could have an even greater impact on health.
