The Golden Globes and the Oscars are two very prestigious award ceremonies in the film industry, especially in Hollywood where they take place. But due to their notoriety, their organizers and their award categories, they are quite different.
In the world of cinema, the Golden Globes kick off. Like every year, the ceremony rewards the best cinematographic and television works. On January 5, the judges were particularly generous with Emilia Perez. Jacques Audiard’s film, nominated ten times, won, among others, the prize for best comedy or musical and the prize for best foreign film, as well as the prize for best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña.
Along with the Oscars, the Golden Globes are a highly anticipated event by the seventh art. But what makes them different?
Not the same voters
Although they both take place in Los Angeles, California, the two ceremonies do not have the same organizers. The Golden Globes, the first edition of which dates from 1944, was invented by foreign journalists from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Today they are American and international journalists from the cultural world, not necessarily members of the HFPA, which are the voters. As for the Oscars, officially called the Academy Awards, they are managed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), a professional organization made up of directors, actors, screenwriters, and other cinema professions. This is also why the films awarded by the Golden Globes are different from those awarded by the Oscars.
The number of voters is also not the same: around 9,900 people for the second, compared to only 334 for the first.
Different award categories
Another differentiation: the reward categories. The Golden Globes reward both movies and TV showsin distinguishing them by gender such as “dramatic”, “comedy or musical” or even “best foreign language film”. On the contrary, the Oscars focus only on cinema and offer a greater number of technical categoriessuch as the best visual effects or the best editing.
Finally, the trophies do not have the same head. That of the Golden Globes is a gold globe, while the statuette of the Oscars represents the silhouette of a human, arms closed, holding a sword.
What is the most prestigious ceremony?
The press often considers the Oscars as the most prestigious event, and is part of the most sought-after awards by actors. He does part of the EGOT (acronym for the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards), the Holy Grail for an American actor.
It is also the ceremony which brings together a bigger audience. According to CNN, the 2022 edition, which saw Will Smith slap Chris Rock, attracted 16.6 million viewers, compared to 6.3 million people for the 2023 Golden Globes.
