Morocco will be represented at the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale by the “Materiae Palimpsest” project, designed by the two young architects Khalil Morad El Ghilali and El Mehdi Belyasmine. This innovative project offers an immersive experience where tradition and innovation meet, exploring the art of earth construction while revisiting the concept of collective intelligence.

Khalil Morad El Ghilali, teacher at the National School of Architecture of Marrakech, is the head of Atelier BE, an interdisciplinary firm founded in 2019 where he explores the links between architecture, climate, ecology and new technologies. As for El Mehdi Belyasmine, founder of the architecture and design studio Belyas & Co and graduate of prestigious institutions such as ETH Zurich (Switzerland) and ULB La Cambre Horta (Belgium), he puts his international expertise to work innovative projects, combining creative design and digital solutions for sustainable architecture.

The project was selected as part of a national architectural competition, the jury of which was headed by Mehdi Qotbi, president of the National Museum Foundation. The competition focused on the design and layout of the exhibition of the Moroccan pavilion, in accordance with the general theme of the Biennale and that of earthen architecture. Inspired by vernacular practices, this approach highlights the use of local and sustainable materials, combining resilience, aesthetics and harmony with the natural and cultural environment.
