Recalling her performance in 'The Wolf of Wall Street,' Margot Robbie revealed her fear of being arrested after improvising a scene with Leonardo DiCaprio.
More fear than harm. More than a decade after playing Naomi Lapaglia in “The Wolf of Wall Street”, Margot Robbie confided in the “Talking Pictures” podcast that the filming of the film, Martin Scorsese's biggest commercial success, could have taken a turn dramatic for her.
When she spoke about her last audition for this comedy thriller alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie said she tried an original approach. According to the script, her character was supposed to kiss Jordan Belfort, but, to everyone's surprise, she chose another path. “I thought I could kiss Leonardo DiCaprio right now, and it would be great. I can't wait to tell all my friends. And then I thought… No. And I just hit him in the face.”
“There was dead silence for what seemed like an eternity, but was only three seconds. Then they burst out laughing. Leo and Marty were laughing so hard they said, 'That was great.' I was like, 'I'm going to get arrested, I'm pretty sure it's assault. Not only will you never work again, but you'll go to jail for it, stupid. Also, why did you hit him so hard? You should have done it more gently,'” she added. Fortunately, this audacity worked in his favor.
A revealing film
Inspired by true events, “The Wolf of Wall Street” traces the rise and fall of Jordan Belfort, a Wall Street trader in the 1980s. Upon its release, the film was a huge success. However, Margot Robbie was not prepared for the impact of this sudden fame.
The actress told Vanity Fair that she went through a difficult time after the film, which she describes as one of her “lowest moments.” “There was something happening at the beginning and it was quite horrible, and I remember saying to my mother, 'I don't think I want to do this.' She looked at me, her face completely impassive, and said, 'Honey, I think it's too late not to do it.' “That’s when I realized the only solution was to move forward,” she added.
Margot Robbie has since become one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood, starring in films such as “I, Tonya” (2017), “Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Tale of Harley Quinn” (2020), or again “Barbie” (2023).
