V from BTS, Jennie from BLACKPINK, Hyunjin from Stray Kids, Song Joong Ki and more will be present at the 76th Cannes Film Festival! Find all the stars below!
The 76th Cannes Film Festival kicked off on the afternoon of May 16 (local time) at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes, a seaside town in southern France, and will run for 11 nights and 12 days until May 27. .
This year, Korean films did not compete in the competitive section of the festival. However, a total of five feature films were selected in different sections.
In the out-of-competition section, “Cobweb” garnered attention, “Hopeless” garnered interest, “Project Silence” screened at midnight, “Sleep” was invited to Critics’ Week, and In Our Day” was chosen as the closing film of the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs.
Additionally, BLACKPINK’s Jennie made her acting debut in the HBO series “The Idol” and also participated in the out-of-competition section.
“Cobweb” (directed by Kim Ji Woon) is a film that depicts the desperate and humorous events that take place when director Kim (Song Kang Ho), obsessed with the belief that remaking the ending of the movie “Cobweb” shot in the 1970s will make it better, continues filming despite obstacles from censorship authorities and actors and producers who don’t understand the edited content.
Song Kang Ho has attended the Cannes Film Festival a total of eight times, counting only invitations. He debuted with “The Host” (Directors’ Fortnight) in 2006, then attended the festival with “Secret Sunshine” (Competition) in 2007, “The Good, the Bad, the Weird” (Out of competition) in 2008, ” Thirst” (Competition) in 2009, “Parasite” (Competition) in 2019, “Emergency Declaration” (Out of Competition) in 2021, and “Broker” (Competition) in 2022.
Last year, Song Kang Ho became the first Korean actor to win Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival for “Broker,” which makes his visit this year also significant.
“Hopeless” (directed by Kim Chang Hoon) is a film noir that tells the story of Yeon Gyu, who wishes to escape a hellish reality, meeting Chi Gun, the deputy head of an organization and finding himself immersed in a precarious world.
Song Joong Ki stars as Chi Gun, while young actor Hong Sa Bin plays Yeon Gyu. This is the director’s first feature film. Song Joong Ki will make his first visit to Cannes thanks to this film.
“Project Silence” is a story of people trapped on the Airport Bridge, shrouded in thick, indiscernible fog, struggling to survive in the face of unexpected chain disasters.
Directed by Kim Tae Gon and produced by “Along with the Gods” series director Kim Yong Hwa, “Project Silence” stars Lee Sun Kyun, Ju Ji Hoon, and Kim Hee Won. Ju Ji Hoon and Kim Hee Won are visiting Cannes for the second time.
“Sleep” is a film that tells the story of a young newlywed couple, Hyun Soo and Soo Jin, whose lives are clouded by Hyun Soo’s abnormal sleeping behavior and the horrifying secret that unfolds when he falls asleep.
The film stars Jung Yu Mi and Lee Sun Kyun, with Jung Yu Mi being invited to Cannes for the fourth time and Lee Sun Kyun for the third time. Lee Sun Kyun is particularly attracting attention as he heads to Cannes with two lead roles this year.
“In Our Day” by Hong Sang Soo marks his 12th official invitation to the Cannes Film Festival. “In Our Day” is a touching tribute to the ordinary moments of life, where the Korean maestro focuses on the joy of gathering around a table.
Jennie’s first acting experience, “The Idol,” is a series produced by The Weeknd that tells the stories of all the relationships surrounding a young pop idol and the music industry.
Jennie will appear on the red carpet on May 22 at 8:30 p.m. local time. Song Joong Ki, and Hyunjin will be present on May 23, Jung Soo Jung (Krystal), Lee Sun Kyun, Ju Ji Hoon, Song Kwang Ho, will also be present. Kim Hyung Seo (Bibi) and æspa group will be present on May 24th.
aespa will also travel to Cannes as ambassadors for the jewelry brand Chopard, sponsor of the Cannes Film Festival. This is the first time that a K-pop group will walk the Cannes red carpet.
