“Why do French people you don’t know appear on Björk’s account? » Fans of the Icelandic singer discovered a message on her Instagram page that contrasts with the artist's usual content. In a short video published Thursday, environmental activists like Camille Étienne, the founder of the Bloom association Claire Nouvian and the Breton navigator Titouan Pillard appear in front of the camera, criticizing the environmental policy implemented by the head of state.
“Don’t worry, we didn’t hack his account. On the contrary: Björk has made her account available to us to alert you to the French touch », Indicates Camille Étienne while scrolling her message on signs. There French touch mentioned here is not the French electro scene of the 1990s, but that of an “ecological tragedy” which has “consequences on the oceans and marine biodiversity”, point out the activists.
According to them, Emmanuel Macron “claims that France acts as a champion in terms of protecting the oceans and marine animals, while at the same time authorizing industrial fishing boats to destroy the seabed, particularly in areas called protected. But “protecting the oceans is vital. The ocean is the main regulator of the planet's climate. It has already absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat generated by human activities,” recalls the trio of activists. Their message scrolls, showing images of marine flora and fauna behind them.
“Protecting the oceans is an essential issue. Time is running out. (…) Protecting the oceans means protecting ourselves and all life on Earth,” they continue. Before inviting “everyone” to “alert President Emmanuel Macron” to stop this policy, to “sign an international petition” to this effect and to “finance legal action” in France. “If there is enough international pressure, we can achieve protection rather than destruction,” the activists hope.
Artist Björk's fight for ecology is not new. In recent years, the singer has repeatedly called on her government to protect the biodiversity of Icelandic lands. “I am getting involved today because politicians seem determined to destroy Icelandic nature,” she explained in 2008.
In 2020, she also signed a column by Greta Thunberg calling for facing “the climate emergency”. Last year, she also released the song “Oral” with Spanish singer Rosalía to denounce aquaculture and intensive salmon farming in her native country.
“I offer a song that we performed with Rosalía. The profits will be donated to the fight against aquaculture in Iceland,” she explained at the time.
