Already a well-established star during the 80s, Clint Eastwood was not unanimously popular with the big names in the profession, particularly Marlon Brando.

In 1982, while he was a box office hit in the buddy movie 48 Hrs., Eddie Murphy was invited to dinner by the star of stars at the time, Marlon Brando, actor of The Godfather and A Streetcar Named Desire. And during this dinner, which he recounted in the podcast The InterviewMurphy recalled the moment Brando lashed out at Clint Eastwood:

Eastwood? A “kid”

That’s how long ago it was, he said to me, ‘I can’t stand that kid with the gun.’ I said, ‘What kid with a gun?’ And he said, ‘He’s on the poster!’

Murphy then looks at the poster in front of him and recognizes Clint Eastwood. So this was the Dirty Harry star that Marlon Brando called “kid.” For some context, Brando was born in 1924 and Eastwood in 1930, so they are only six years apart.

In 1982, Eastwood starred in two films that he also directed: Honkytonk Man, the story of a country singer battling alcoholism and a declining career, and Firefox, a Cold War action film.

During this same period, Brando did not act. Since the thriller The Formula (1980), directed by John G. Avildsen with George C. Scott, which traces the investigation of a police officer around the disappearance of the synthetic oil formula invented by the Nazis, the actor had not acted again and would not work again until the excellent A Dry White Season (1989).

Eddie Murphy has never worked with the On the Waterfront actor. He is currently in a new episode of Beverly Hills Cop on Netflix. As for Brando, who died in 2004, he is currently played by Matt Dillon in Maria, a biopic about Maria Schneider, an actress sexually assaulted during the filming of Last Tango in Paris:
