This is one of the performances that made sensation during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games in July 2024. While everyone thought she was going to cover a title by Edith Piaf, Aya Nakamura proposed a mix between her titles Pookie et Djadja with the emblematic For Me Formidable by Charles Aznavour. A success according to Mischa Aznavour, one of the singer's children. To our colleagues at La Voix du nord, he assured: “We are very happy“. And to indicate that his famous father “would have liked.” On the choice to revisit Charles Aznavour's song, he clarified: “Singing his songs again like him has no point. It's like Molière, if we want it to continue to speak to people. We can't be backward-looking.” Aya Nakamura had to bear the brunt of numerous criticisms, particularly on the modernization of Aznavour's title but also on her fiercely criticized look.

Guest on the set of C to youThursday November 28, she returned to this experience in front of Anne-Elisabeth Lemoine and told l’“confusion” at the center of which she found herself. Indeed, while rumors claimed that she was going to cover Edith Piaf, the singer had to face a completely different debate behind the scenes. A few weeks before shining on the Pont des Arts, it was Place Vendôme that a privileged few were able to see the star perform. The mother of two attended the Vogue World show in a stunning brown outfit and singing to the delight of guests. The problem? The organizers of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games were not really up for it… I decided to do it but before going there was a problem with the Olympics because I had to be exclusively at the Olympics”, she first explained on France 5. Then detailed: The Olympics didn't want me to do the Vogue event. SO Anna Wintour discussed with them because I had to.”

Aya Nakamura finds a compromise

Aya Nakamura was finally able to participate in both events, although not without difficulty. “Basically, I had to sing Edith Piaf during the Vogue evening, and not at the Olympics. So when there were controversies, I told myself that if I participated in the fashion show, I would not sing La vie en rose but a song of my own. Like that, the Olympic committee was happy […] Anyway, a whole mess around that”, she regretted.

Faced with Anne-Elisabeth Lemoine, she also spoke about how she combines her career and her life as mother of Aïcha and Ava. “It was complicated for a woman to do two things at once. I felt a lot of anxiety, when you have children and you're a woman, it's impossible to work. Sometimes we feel guilty.”she admitted. Then to conclude, proud of not having given up: “I hurt myself to be able to move forward and have confidence in myself. It's possible to be a mother and sing, I've been doing it for almost 10 years!”.
