In an interview with the British site “The Times of London”, Keira Knightley spoke about the mixed feelings she has about her participation in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” saga. And the criticism received at the time.
A mixed feeling. Keira Knightley was only 17 years old in 2003 when she played the character of Elizabeth in the first part of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” saga alongside Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp. A particularly intense experience which convinced him, at almost 40 years old, never to participate in a film franchise again for the rest of his career. At least that’s what she assured the British site “The Times of London”.
“It’s a pretty amazing thing to have an experience that carries you and breaks you at the same time,” she said. “I was looked down upon for these films, and yet their success was such that I was given the opportunity to make the films that earned me an Oscar nomination (for “Pride and Prejudice”). and “Imitation Game”, editor’s note). They were the most popular films I would ever make, and they were the source of a rampage against me. So they occupy a rather confusing place in my head,” she added.
Public humiliation
After starring in the first three films, between 2003 and 2007, Keira Knightley made a promise to herself to never again star in such a colossal franchise. “The working hours are dizzying. These are years of your life, where you have no control over filming locations and content,” she said.
The 39-year-old actress also explained that the notoriety, and the fact of finding herself at the heart of discussions about her physical appearance – in particular the rumors of anorexia to which she was the subject – were painful moments that she excluded from his memory. But which sometimes rise to the surface.
“I know I wasn’t anorexic. I knew what I was eating. But as with certain traumas, I have no memory of it. There was a total erasure of my memory about it, but sometimes memories come back to me, and I will have a physical memory of what was nothing more than public humiliation. It’s part of me today, given how young I was that this happened. I built myself around that,” she confided.
Keira Knightley will soon star in the series “Black Doves” with Ben Whishaw, which is scheduled to launch on December 5 on Netflix.
