The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain, A Long Engagement Sunday, Da Vinci Code, Coco Before Chanel… At 48, Audrey Tautou has an exceptional career and starred in many successful films. Thanks to her work and her talent, she has won prestigious awards such as the César for Most Promising Actress, or the Best Actress Prize at the Lumières ceremony.
If seeing her work recognized by professionals and film buffs was a consecration for the actress, her destiny began to escape her by becoming famous and she began to feel disconnected. Friday November 15, 2024, in an interview with Madame Figaro, she declared: “I began to enjoy luxury. I became one of those who pose on the covers of magazines, who know the palaceslimousines, and to whom we lend jewelry and haute couture clothes”.
Audrey Tautou: “I didn’t have time to desire fame”
In complete transparency, the 48-year-old actress declared: “I was a young girl of 20 who, suddenly, found herself taken from her original environment. I had a childhood in Montluçon, with traditional parents (father a surgeon, mother a teacher, editor's note), even if they had an artistic streak. We spent our vacations in a campervan, and this new life of luxury left me perplexed.”.
If Audrey Tautou found herself at the top of the bill and on all television sets, she had difficulty accepting this new life. “I didn’t have time to desire fame, it arrived without transition, like an explosion. This type of recognition didn't interest me at all“, she assured before specifying that as soon as The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain was released, the way people looked at her had become “odd”.
Audrey Tautou: “My vision changed when I was in the street”
During this interview, Matthieu Chedid's ex-partner explained: “The first time I noticed it in a queue at the airport, a week after the film came out: a stewardess was speaking to passengers in an unfriendly manner, then she looked at me, and his face lit up with a huge smile. Suddenly I was an exception, a fantasy“.
Audrey Tautou then clarified that if nothing had changed in her and that her roots “remained intact”she observed what was happening to her with detachment. “I started doing this photographic and writing work to keep track of this experience, without really knowing what I was going to do with it. Over time, I accepted my status as a movie starand I stopped seeing blurry”she added.
