Paul Caponigro died.
We have published his work several times. Among them this one in 2023, on the occasion of the publication of his book Visual Memories And Hidden Places to Veritas Editions.

“For me, the photographic image is a meeting of time, space, light and point of view and to this I would add my emotional position. » —Paul Caponigro

Paul Caponigro (born 1932 in Boston, MA) is a living icon in the world of photographic art. For more than sixty years, the renowned American photographer has shared glimpses of his worldview through his particular form of noticing. “Being a photographer is, above all, being an observer…” he notes in one of the texts that accompany each of his images, collected in a limited edition artisanal art book from Veritas Press.

Early in his career, Caponigro met students of Ansel Adams, and Bennie Chin in particular was influential in his teaching. He writes: “Over time, I realized that a good photograph was not the result of good technique alone: the expressive print requires emotional depth, not just dazzling depth, and can only be artistically effective if the soft domain of emotion is united with the hardest technical concerns… and this transition takes photography from a recording medium to a transformative medium. »

Whether an image of an ordinary frozen window pane or a larger landscape photograph at a site like Stone Henge, this emotional and “transformative” aesthetic subsequently became a signature of his photographs. Mastered composition and printing techniques combine with images full of wonder and history, whether architectural structures or still life compositions of fruit on a simple kitchen table.

“My next adventure would be into the darkroom to try to place into a finished print all the feelings and wonder felt when capturing the image on film. » – Paul Caponigro
