Lady Gabriella Windsor guest of honor at the royal procession at Ascot

Featured in the royal procession on the first day of the Ascot horse races? An honor. This June 18, 2024, Lady Gabriella Windsor took part for the first time, alongside Princess Anne, Peter Phillips and the former racing director of Elizabeth II, John Warren. The distant cousin of Charles III thus marks her first official public appearance since the death of her husband, Thomas Kingston.

Around 2 p.m. (London time), the royal procession arrives at the prestigious Ascot racecourse. At its head, King Charles III and Queen Camilla, accompanied by their friends, the Duke and Duchess of Wellington. On this June 18, however, all eyes are fixed on the carriage which is rolling just behind them. Under her pale pink hat, Lady Gabriella Windsor, with a smile on her lips, greets the spectators seated in the stands. For the first time, the sovereign’s second cousin took her place to the left of Princess Anne, opposite Peter Phillips and the former racing director of Elizabeth II and family friend, John Warren, to parade at the opening of the horse races. A privilege for the one affectionately nicknamed “Ella”, who is making her return to public life after the tragic death of her husband, Thomas Kingston, on February 25. With the unconditional support of the royal family.

A symbolic appearance alongside the king and queen

Since the suicide of her husband in her parents’ house, the daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent has been able to count on the support of her parents as well as that of the Windsors. Returning to live at Kensington Palace, as close as possible to her family, to overcome her grief, the 43-year-old woman had not yet been seen in public.

However, she had been invited by Charles III to attend Trooping the Color on June 15. What she did, but in the shadow of her distant cousins. While the sovereigns and active members of the monarchical institution pose on Buckingham’s famous balcony, its thin and slender silhouette can be seen in the window frame. The outline of a resumption of social life? We had to wait until the first day of Ascot, the unmissable event of the season, to see his charming smile again.

And what a pleasure for royal watchers to know she was thus invited to the procession! What’s more, alongside the royal princess. “What a lovely gesture: Lady Gabriella Kingston was invited by the King to take part in the royal procession today at #RoyalAscot,” enthuses Rebbecca English, journalist for Daily Mailon. In her floral dress in pastel tones, Gabriella looks happy and serene. The event, however, has its share of emotions. In 2023, she attended with her husband Thomas Kingston. The couple was even invited to join Charles and Camilla in the royal box, offering lovely moments of complicity. Those close to her know: being present at this new edition without the man she considered to be the man of her life on her arm is not an easy task.

So to try to ease his pain, the few members of the royal family present support him as best they can. By offering him a seat in one of the processionary prams, Charles III and Queen Camilla spared him a solitary arrival, while showing him how much they loved him. While she has just set foot on the ground, “Ella” finds new support in the person of Zara, always accompanied by her husband Mike Tindall. At the sight of her, Princess Anne’s daughter hugs her with benevolent spontaneity. Certainly, Gabriella is far from being alone in this ordeal. Because when a Windsor falls to his lowest point, it is the entire clan that lifts him up.
