First smiling appearance of Queen Margrethe since her fall

Queen Margrethe of Denmark returned to work on November 5, 2024. The former Danish sovereign had been on forced leave for almost eight weeks, following a fall that caused a fracture and injuries. This Tuesday, Queen Margrethe regained her usual smile to ensure her first public engagement since her accident.

Queen Margrethe is back at work

On September 18, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, 84, fell at the end of the day, while she was staying at Fredensborg Castle, about forty kilometers from Copenhagen. Queen Margrethe's last appearance was the day before her fall, when she presented the 2024 Rungstedlund Prize at the Karen Blixen Museum. After almost eight weeks of recovery, Queen Margrethe was back at work on November 5, 2024. Her last appearance was an awards ceremony and her first appearance after her hospitalization was an awards ceremony again. Queen Margrethe simply held a cane in her hand, a cane which she had already been using for some time before her fall.

Queen Margrethe presents the honorary Ebbe Munch Prize to Margrethe Vestager

Queen Margrethe presented the 2024 Ebbe Munch Honorary Prize to Margrethe Vestager during a ceremony at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen. Queen Margrethe is patron of the Ebbe Munck Memorial Fund, which awards the Ebbe Munck Honorary Prize each year. The prize honors the memory of journalist Ebbe Munck (1905-1974) who fought for freedom of expression. He also served as Danish ambassador to several countries and a member of the Danish royal court.

The prize recognizes an individual who has worked in areas of interest related to the life of Ebbe Munch. Margrethe Vestager is a Danish politician who was Minister of the Economy from 2011 to 2014, then for 10 years European Commissioner for Competition from 2014. During this mandate, she is known for having led fights against unfair competition of certain American giants like Apple and Google. She is currently the third vice-president of the European Commission.
