An anime-sized event Les Sables-d’Olonne for several days: the 10e edition of the Vendée Globe.

“A race which has made history and which has become a global event”, as underlines Jean-François Dejean, deputy mayor in charge of culture.

The City wanted to celebrate this anniversary by giving this particular edition “a cultural dimension”.

A large temporary exhibition within the museum of modern and contemporary art was the best way.

Obviously, Titouan Lamazou won because he is both the first winner of the Vendée Globe and a renowned and high-quality artist.

Nature takes precedence over man

Until March 2, the Sainte- Abbey Museum (Masc) therefore welcomes the exhibition of Titouan Lamazou which presents, in two rooms, his most recent works.

After his “travel diaries” or his work paying tribute to the “women of the world”, the painter, through nearly 150 worksa real ddeclaration of love to nature.

There, I switched to something completely different from what I painted before. These are landscapes. Nature takes over, man has disappeared.

His landscapes are reminiscent of the paintings of Gauguin, Doyle, Matisse… Inspirations that he assumes being a great admirer of these artists.

An abundance of biodiversity

What fascinates Titouan Lamazouit is the abundance of terrestrial and marine biodiversity. His painting also carries a message: that of the preservation of this “paradise on earth”.

More a paradise that is fragile. “I present the wonderful aspect of biodiversity rather than presenting things in a catastrophic way. »

Titouan Lamazou works in cooperation with scientistsnotably Camille Mazé, research director at the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research).

A scientific approach to painting which was born in 2016, following a revelation he had during a meeting with a researcher: “He made me realize that we live in a very fragile, small and wonderful habitat. The surface of planet Earth is a tiny film, which could be compared to the varnish on a billiard ball. »

This is what some scientists call “the critical zone.”

Draw underwater!

It is in his paradise, Polynesia where he lives a good part of the year, that Titouan Lamazou draws his inspiration: landscapes, traditions, legends, the sea and the sky. The infinitely small and the infinitely large coexist in an explosion of colors which represent in some way an “explosion of biodiversity”.

He will observe this biodiversity up close. And that’s an understatement sincehe goes so far as to make his sketches underwater before painting in the studio.

He thus observes the inhabitants of the lagoon, the corals in particular, by stationing himself at a depth of five meters with his oxygen bottles and his easel!

For two hours, very stable thanks to lead, I stand in front of these settings, on my knees, and I draw.

For this, he uses plasticized sheets that resist humidity and oil pastels.

“A frustrated sculptor”

This Sables-d’Olonne exhibition is also an opportunity to discover the first sculpture by Titouan Lamazou. Indeed, one of the majestic paintings hanging upstairs at the Masc features a bas-relief carved in lime wood.

The artist admits with a smile: “I am a frustrated sculptor! I love sculpture, the relationship with the material, this sensation… But the sculpture is difficult to transport while I am always moving…”

This exhibition, accompanied bya very beautiful work entitled “Under the stars”is an ode to our planet Earth and its wonders. A poetic journey to one of the most beautiful places in the world. Not to be missed under any circumstances!
