“Comme they say”, “La bohème”, “Je m’voyais déjà”, “Hier encore”, Emmenez-moi”, “Les acteurs”… The emblematic songs of Charles Aznavour have resonated since this Wednesday in all French cinemas with the release of “Monsieur Aznavour”, an event biopic directed by Mehdi Idir and Grand Corps Malade. And Tahar Rahim, transformed in the film, gave his voice and his person to best embody the singer, who died in 2018. “ His phrasing – different from most other artists because he came from the streets – is what I was able to acquire the quickest. And he used the word wonderfully. His writing was genius. One of Charles' regrets is not having entered the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres, even though he wrote wonderful songs… » assures the actor in the magazine Vogue.

Charles Aznavour more popular than Amy Winehouse

In theaters since this Wednesday, “Monsieur Aznavour” receives a rather mixed reception from the press, which speaks of a ” superb and powerful tribute ”, but also a biopic “ sinister » et « heartbreaking “. However, the public is more lenient, as proven by the spectator rating of 4.2/5 on the Allociné site. Is this reflected in the numbers? The first box office scores have just fallen and the signals are rather green! For its first day of release, the film “Monsieur Aznavour” attracted 70,052 spectators to French cinemas. A figure which even climbs to 101,826 entries taking into account previews.

Encouraging figures which place “Monsieur Aznavour” between the last two event biopics released in cinemas this year. So Charles Aznavour made more money than Amy Winehouse, whose film “Back to Black” attracted 49,200 spectators in 24 hours. But the film is far from the stratospheric scores of “Bob Marley: One Love”, a real surprise success with 197,000 admissions counted with the previews. As a reminder, the two previous feature films of Large Sick Body and Mehdi Idir, “Patients” (2017) and “La vie scolaire” (2019) attracted 1.2 and 1.8 million spectators respectively. Will “Monsieur Aznavour” do better, especially in the face of upcoming competition from the blockbusters “Venom: The Last Dance” or “Gladiator II”? Response within a few weeks!
