Officially launched on Tuesday May 14, 2024 on the Croisette, the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will end on Saturday May 25, 2024. Indeed, the traditional ceremony which closes this event each year will take place within the Palais des Festivals today. In addition to the various prizes that will be awarded to the winners of the official competition, an honorary Palme d’Or will be awarded to a living legend of Hollywood cinema. Indeed, George Lucas will receive this symbolic distinction for his entire career. As a reminder, the American filmmaker is mainly known for having created the film franchise Star Wars. He also sold his work for several billion dollars to Disney in 2015. With this money, George Lucas was able to diversify his activities by investing in areas other than cinema.

For example, he created a group of vineyards called Skywalker Vineyards, in reference to the name of the franchise hero. Star Wars. Within this famous group is a French vineyard located in Haut-Var, which George Lucas acquired in 2017. And the least we can say is that the director saw things in big for the Château Margüi estate located in Chateauvert: it is 120 hectares! A plan to restructure the vineyard was established over nine years. “We are at 21 hectares planted and the objective is to reach 25 hectares in 2027“, indicates the director of the site, Yann Jouët, in the columns of Nice morning. In total, George Lucas’ Château Margüi estate covers no less than 28 plots.

The wine produced by the filmmaker’s employees has also been very successful in recent years. “The majority of people come here for the quality of the wine and certainly not for the name of the owner. Moreover, most often, they are not even aware“, specifies Yann Jouët. 100,000 bottles were produced on the estate, 60% of production is dedicated to rosé, 30% red and 10% white. To this are also added 5 hectares of olive trees but also 50 hives which allow the production of organic rosemary honey and flower mixtures.

George Lucas offers high-end accommodation in his Var estate

In addition to selling his wine, George Lucas has also developed a high-end accommodation business within his Var estate. Indeed, the large building on site is not one of the filmmaker’s personal properties. It is in fact a high-end residence offered for rental to a few wealthy clients and wine lovers. “This is an exclusive service. When a rental is in progress, people do not meet other customers“, underlines Yann Jouët. In total, the estate is made up of 18 accommodations, which are divided between rooms and suites. It can therefore accommodate a total of 36 guests.
