The former bassist of the American rock group Train, Charlie Colin, was the victim of a domestic accident in Belgium. He was 58 years old.

American bassist Charlie Colin, founding member of the band Train, has died at the age of 58. According to TMZ, he was the victim of a domestic accident: the American media, which cites the artist’s mother, reports that he slipped in his shower while he was looking after a friend’s house in Brussels, in Belgium.

Train’s Instagram account, run by singer Patrick Monahan, paid tribute to Charlie Colin by posting a photo of the band from the 1990s, when they were starting out:

“When I met Charlie Colin, front left, I fell in love,” the singer writes.

“He was handsome and he was the nicest guy. Let’s start a band, that’s the only thing to do. His unique mastery of the bass and his magnificent guitar work made people notice us, San Francisco as elsewhere.”

Seven years and three albums

Charlie Colin, present since the group’s beginnings in 1996, left in 2003 because of his drug addiction, as reported by Variety. “I always tried to bring him back, but he had his own vision,” writes Patrick Monahan. You’re a legend, Charlie.”

Charlie Colin grew up in Newport Beach, California. He studied music at Berklee University in Boston, before joining his first band, Apostles, alongside musician Rob Hotchkiss. It is the latter, upon joining Train, who takes him with him.

The bassist contributed to Train’s first three albums, released between 1999 and 2003. On their second album, Drops of Jupiter, features the song of the same title, which has become one of their most iconic pieces. It won them the Grammy for Best Rock Song in 2002.

Six years after Charlie Colin’s departure, Train released the song Hey, Soul Sistera worldwide hit which undoubtedly remains their best-known title to this day.

Since then, the bassist has worked with Slipknot and Puddle of Mudd. He also set up other training courses. According to TMZ, he was in Brussels to give lessons at a conservatory.
