After more than three months of operation, the adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ novel by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, enters the top 20 most viewed French films in history.

Pierre Niney is ecstatic. In a tweet written on October 8, the French actor, who plays Edmond Dantès in Le Comte de Monte Cristo directed by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, expresses his joy at the success of the film: “The Count of Monte Cristo passed in front of Amélie Poulain! and enters the top 20 most viewed French films in history!!! Thank you!”

For the record The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulaina film by Jean Pierre Jeunet released on screens in 2001, attracted 8,636,041 spectators to theaters. With an attendance figure of 8,664,506 spectators, Le Comte de Monte Cristowhere Pierre Niney wonderfully plays Captain Dantès unfairly thrown into the jails of the Château d’If for 14 years, now passes Jeunet’s magical comedy carried by the charm of Audrey Tautou by a whisker.

This attendance record was therefore achieved in just over three months of operation, since the release of the film on June 28, 2024. If spectators continue to flock to theaters to see this new Dumasian adaptation, including Le Figaro had said “that it was jubilant and sunny”, he could in the coming weeks catch up with cult films like Emmanuelle (8.9 million in 1974), Asterix and Obelix against Caesar (8.9 million in 1999), The Bear (9.1 million in 1988), The Big Blue (9.2 million in 1988), The idiots’ dinner (9.2 million in 1998).

Now close to the top 20 at the French box office, Le Comte de Monte Cristocan he aim for the top 3. The bar for the moment still seems a little high. For the record, Welcome to the ch’tis (2008) made more than 20 million spectators laugh. And his dolphins Untouchables (2011) et The Big Mop (1966), respectively some 19 million and 17 million spectators. Will Dantès’ revenge rival the irresistible humor of Boon, Sy and Funès? Nothing is less certain…
