In La soif de vivre, Claire Keim tackles a subject as complex as it is current: alcoholism. It is therefore with frankness that the actress spoke about her own relationship with drink.
At 49, Claire Keim has had a string of successes on the small screen. After making her debut in the musical comedy Paul and Virginiethe actress multiplies appearances in several films and television series. But it was not until 2004 that she really broke through with the role of Esther Delaître in Zodiacthe TF1 event series. The public was also able to witness his talent in Unfaithful or even The thirst for lifea TV film by France 2 which deals with the theme of alcoholism.
Claire Keim tackles alcoholism on screen
A subject that is certainly heavy but which speaks to many people, as Claire Keim confided in an interview with Le Parisien. “There are as many faces of alcohol as there are alcoholics”she declared to our colleagues. Then she went on to explain the film in more detail: “In fiction, remaining only in the suffering of this mother would have been unbearable. Here, everything happens through the eyes of her son: we realize that she loves her children but that does not prevent her from destroying herself. She must realize and accept to receive help. I proposed something that brought me back to my fears, to my demons, to what I could see”. Because in fact, Bixente Lizarazu’s partner has personally had to deal with this kind of problem in her personal life.
The actress has had close encounters with addiction
This time, speaking to Télé Loisirs, Claire Keim assures us: “We all know people who suffer from addiction – alcohol, drugs, medication…”. And very often, these people have difficulty admitting their addiction to alcohol and asking for help. “I have met women whose problem is unsuspected”remembers the one who confided in her intimate scenes on screen.
“They do yoga at 8 a.m., always sign the little one’s notebook, but behind this facade, it’s a disaster. And there is a pride in living one’s addiction as an intimate drama, that no one can understand, in taking refuge in suffering.”.
Claire Keim: “Addiction is stronger than us”
Claire Keim, who has witnessed the ravages of alcohol, admits that she has not been a victim of drink but does admit to allowing herself a glass of Bordeaux from time to time. “More I am vigilant : I don’t like the idea of not being free and I have identified everything that could put my freedom at risk. Addiction is stronger than us”she says.
Besides, the one that started “very early in this profession” adds having “saw a lot of excess”. “I could have been eaten ten times! Fortunately, I had painful awakenings where I didn’t remember anything. These situations served as alerts for me. I slipped through the cracks. Is it a blessing? I don’t take pride in it.”.
