Maïwenn “abandoned” by Luc Besson, her sister Isild tells

In his autobiographical story, Isild Le Besco delves into his memories and looks back on the marriage between his sister Maïwenn and Luc Besson, going through social ascension and ending in disillusionment.

“I was forced to realize that life with money was more peaceful. » In 1991, when Maïwenn met Luc Besson (seventeen years her senior) backstage at the Césars, it was not just the life of the teenager that would change, but also that of her little sister, Isild Le. Besco.

She was only eight years old at that time, today she is forty-one and recounts the turning point her life took when Luc Besson crossed paths with Maïwenn. In his book “Dire Vrai” available this May 1 from Denoël, Isild le Besco remembers: “My world was divided into two distinct poles, two social classes. On the one hand, Belleville, marginality, precariousness – especially emotional; on the other, luxury and lightness at its side. »

First of all, Isild le Besco led this new life carefreely, working alongside the director on a daily basis: “One day, Luc took me to school on a motorbike. I was happy ! Proud. […] I saw Luc as the promise of a better world, an ideal. » The one who grew up in a more than modest environment, discovered vacations in luxurious houses, swimming pools, helicopter rides…

“My sister was sixteen when she gave birth to her daughter”

During her story, Isild le Besco returns to a vague detail of the union between her sister and the director: “1993. My sister was sixteen when she gave birth to her daughter. Maïwenn told us about a marriage, but it was not formalized in France. I have no memory of her delivery or the clinic where it took place. Yet there are dozens of photos that establish my presence. »

After this birth, Isild Le Besco saw her sister leave: “When my sister Maïwenn told me on the phone that she was leaving for the United States, I was nine years old and she was just sixteen. » The couple will return from time to time to Paris, in a large apartment near Parc Monceau, welcoming on these occasions the rest of Maïwenn’s siblings: Isild, Jowan and Léonor.

Luc Besson under the spell of Milla Jovovich, also in her twenties

One day the dream ends. Isild le Besco recounts the descent into hell of her sister, abandoned by Luc Besson: “In Cannes, in 1997, it was Luc’s “The Fifth Element” which opened the Festival. Maïwenn was absent from the red carpet, Luc walked on the arm of Milla Jovovich, the film’s main actress. And his new companion. »

Dethroned by the Ukrainian actress, Maïwenn is humiliated. In her book, her sister says: “She took all her courage to appear alongside Luc and the woman who had replaced her during filming. […] In Cannes, the car that was supposed to pick her up for the opening never arrived. Maïwenn had been forgotten in the eyes of the whole world. She went to the screening alone, without cameras. On foot, I think. »

This is the end of the pomp: “Luc had the power to instantly take someone out of their environment, to offer them the dream of family life, then to take it all back in an instant. »

“Distrust and systematic abjection towards men”

Isild le Besco publishes this story to denounce the sexual assaults of Benoît Jacquot, the director already accused by many French actresses. She also takes advantage of writing to reveal the resentment she maintains towards her sister’s ex-husband. “If I look back into the origins of deviance, the face of Luc Besson appears. […] He put all his promises to death. It has infested the future by creating in me distrust and systematic abjection towards men. »

The actress has crossed paths with the director several times during her career. She particularly remembers a dinner with President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni: “Luc went to look for photos of me as a child in Los Angeles. He showed me the photos with tenderness, I smiled. […] I might blame myself for needing a book to tell him what I think of his actions. »
