Derrick Rose (35) officially retires

A basketball legend is hanging up his sneakers. It’s official, Derrick Rose announces his retirement. A journey that is both magnificent and terribly frustrating, for a player who made a generation of fans dream and will remain, whatever happens, one of the best of his era.

When the Grizzlies announced they had cut his contract a few days ago, we had hope. A slightly crazy hope, that the Bulls, his franchise, the team with which he made such an impression and the baskets, will offer him a magnificent exit in terms of storyline. Alas, this will not happen. At age 35, Derrick Rose retired and withdrew from the professional world.

Derrick Rose is history. Rookie of the Year for his first season in the NBA, MVP for his third. The youngest best NBA player in league history. A huge feat. For a boy with inordinate talent. For Bulls fans, he embodies this renewal that everyone has been looking for since the departure of Michael Jordan in 1998. Yes but.

The injuries, those damn injuries. 2012, then 2013, the knee. Derrick Rose was going to be great. The one the NBA uses to promote all its products, a face for the biggest basketball competition in the world. Alas, he will never recover from his physical problems. Not that he was forced to stop, but he will continue and finish his career in a role and with a level much lower than what everyone expected of him. We remember some very great moments, notably when, during the Heatles period, he himself cooked the gang of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

I’ll never forget the moment Derrick Rose looked the Heatles in the eye and lectured them in Miami.

Of course it was during the regular season, but still what talent! ????pic.twitter.com/hsNdgvTVWj

Then he goes to the Knicks, the Wolves, the Pistons, then New York again and finally the Grizzlies. Without finding stability there, barred by a reduced role and new faces sweeping through the NBA. Despite everything, his journey remains that of an icon who left his mark on an entire generation of fans. And for that, we say thank you, a sincere thank you.
