This Saturday, September 21, 2024, Tony Estanguet, president of the organizing committee of Paris 2024 Olympic Gameswas invited onto the show’s set What a time!hosted by Léa Salamé and Christophe Dechavanne on France 2. With his central role in the organization of the Olympic Games and having overcome the tensions related to the opening ceremony last July, the guest seemed ready to approach this interview with lightness. However, an unexpected remark from Léa Salamé quickly changed the atmosphere of the show.

Léa Salamé: A statement deemed inappropriate about Tony Estanguet’s appearance

Upon his arrival, Tony Estanguet was warmly welcomed by the hosts and the audience. The conversation, initially friendly, took a surprising turn when Léa Salamé made a comment on her guest’s appearance. “You know that you have become beautiful ?”she said, before adding: “You were already handsome, but since the Games, there is something magnetic about you.”

This intervention immediately sparked mixed reactions. While some guests on the set, such as Flavie Flament and Arthur, tried to defuse the situation by joking, others seemed GenoaTony Estanguet himself was visibly surprised by this remark, not used to being complimented in this way in a public setting.

Internet users are outraged

On social networks, this sequence generated a lively discussion. Many Internet users found this comment inappropriate and inappropriatebelieving that it did not fit the framework of a show of this type. Criticism on X (formerly Twitter) quickly came: “Why always bring guests back to their physical appearance?” or even “Léa Salamé, always there to make people feel uncomfortable with her remarks.”

This situation is not a first for the journalist. In April 2024, during an interview with the comedian Artus, the latter had provoked a strong reaction by calling him “annoying” after he had confided that he had stopped drinking alcohol. These moments, often controversial, seem to reflect a divisive animation style. While some viewers appreciate Léa Salamé’s spontaneity, others wonder whether a more measured approach would not be more appropriate.

Excellent start to the third season of What a time! with 1.08 million viewers and a 21% audience share.
