His most loyal fans may have saved his life. Radio presenter Jamie Theakston announced on his Instagram account that he recently underwent surgery to remove a lesion from his vocal cords.

“As you know I recently had surgery to remove a lesion on my vocal cords. The biopsy identified it as stage 1 laryngeal cancer,” the 53-year-old said at first, before giving some more reassuring news. “So… I have cancer… but the cancer has not taken me. The prognosis is very positive and I hope to be back with you in October,” he announced.

“In the meantime, I’ve been told to rest my voice and leave you in the capable hands of JK and Amanda. A big thank you to them and the entire Global family who have been incredibly supportive. Be grateful for this day, and when I see you again, I’ll have a great story to tell you,” concluded the Heart Radio presenter, full of optimism.

Jamie Theakston had gone for tests after concerned listeners contacted him to point out a change in his voice.

“Some of you listeners have noticed that my voice hasn’t been sounding good these past few weeks. I have to thank you. I went to check it out, and the doctors found a lesion on my vocal cords that I had removed this weekend,” he announced several days ago on his Instagram account.

“Heart Breakfast” co-host Amanda Holden, the morning show also hosted by Jamie Theakston, gave an update on her sidekick’s condition during Monday’s show, telling listeners that she and replacement Jason King wanted to keep them “fully up to date on what’s going on.” “Even though it’s been diagnosed as cancer, it’s not all bad news,” she said, adding that Jamie Theakston told them to “keep the shop and the show must go on.”
