These 17,000 households thought their property tax had dropped, but in fact the tax notice was wrong.

Receiving a property tax notice that is lower than the previous year is a rare occurrence. In some municipalities, the rate has not been increased, but in all cases, taxpayers are subject to a 3.9% increase this year, regardless of local decisions, as the tax is increased each year by the annual amount of inflation. However, a resident of the Thouars area, in Deux-Sèvres (79), received a property tax notice for 1,013 euros compared to 1,184 last year. This saving of 171 euros delighted the resident in question. A joy that will however be short-lived. It would in fact be an incomplete property tax notice that concerns all owners of the 24 towns and villages of the Thouarsais Community of Communes, or 17,000 households. A bad surprise rather than a good one, therefore.

An error that will be corrected in November

What could have caused this erroneous opinion? A technical hiccup between the inter-municipal and public finance departments, which resulted in the omission of the mention of the incentive household waste collection tax, according to West France . This tax varies depending on the quantity or nature of the waste produced and is attached to the property tax collected by the Public Treasury. The amount of the incentive household waste collection tax can be around 200 euros. This tax has therefore been deducted from the property tax for these taxpayers. In the column specific to the household waste tax, it is written -100%, a more than dubious formula. The resident who received a property tax notice for an amount of 1013 euros should in reality pay 1215 euros.

The mayor of Thouars, Bernard Paineau, was informed of this error on September 3 and assures that “there is no financial impact for taxpayers and for the community“However, the taxpayers concerned will have to pay the household waste collection tax. A second notice, this time complete, will be sent to the residents concerned in November. In the meantime, residents should receive a letter with explanations from the Community of Communes in the coming days.
