Gabrielzinho, the Brazilian swimming phenomenon who undulates like a dolphin

With three titles already won in Paris, Brazilian Gabriel dos Santos Araujo, nicknamed Gabrielzinho, is one of the big stars of the Paralympic Games. Deprived of his arms following a congenital malformation and suffering from atrophied legs, he manages to swim in the water with disconcerting ease. A star of social networks, he also likes to put on a show in the pools. He has one last race left on Friday to put on a show.

Gabriel dos Santos Araujo likes to celebrate his victories with a little dance. On three occasions, the Brazilian swimmer nicknamed Gabrielzinho (little Gabriel) was cheered by the public as he climbed to the top step of the podium at the Paris Paralympic Games.

After winning a first gold medal in the 100m backstroke, opening the score for Brazil, and a second in the final of the 50m backstroke, he won, on Monday September 2, the gold medal in the 200m freestyle in the S2 category, reserved for people with a significant physical disability.

“I came to Paris to get three gold medals and I achieved that goal so I’m very happy,” said the 22-year-old swimmer, who had already won two gold medals and a silver in Tokyo 2021, after his race. Since the start of the competition in Paris, Gabrielzinho has established himself as the darling of the spectators and the sporting sensation of the Paris Games.
